There are cosmetic surgery procedures that have surprised the common people and gotten the attention of skeptics. There are also those that have shocked, disgusted and outraged the world. Indeed, anything that tampers with the naturalness of humans is a controversial subject. What’s interesting is how the aspects of religion, politics and science merge into the picture, providing a seemingly endless display of both subjective and objective opinions. People want to be beautiful and seek always to alter the status quo; but at what price? Here are five of the most controversial cosmetic surgery procedures.

1. Stem cell harvesting. Since silicone was rendered useless due to its reported negative effects, scientists have begun using the procedure of harvesting stem cells and implanting them on breasts to augment and enlarge them.

In this case, breast tissues can “naturally” grow on their own without any foreign matter having to be placed, which had caused rejection and even infection in some situations. Politicians and health experts debated on the efficacy of the procedure and how stem cells can be the triggering factors for a variety of breast diseases, like lactation insufficiency, breast abnormalities, and breast cancer. On another note, religious sects shake their heads again, arguing that cells should be rightly placed where they were located originally at birth and should not be made into mutated organs and genes.

2. Lipo Dissolve. This cosmetic procedure promises fat cell reduction without any body invasion. The process can be done in a very short span of time; but the patient reportedly experiences pain and some swelling due to the dissolving of fat tissues. What’s intriguing is that Lipo Dissolve is not yet approved by the FDA and there are not enough studies to support its effectiveness. There are many Lipo dissolve clinics worldwide, which eventually spurred the interest of government bodies regarding its true nature and purpose. Until we get definitive answers, people may have to rely on the “wonder” element of this new technique and hope for the best results.

3. Sex change. This cosmetic surgical procedure may be the oldest and most controversial method that is still being debated today. Religious groups claim that it is definitely a sin not to accept the gender by which you were born into. Governments, depending on their laws, can only nod or shake their heads whether or not it is allowed. Although in some states, altering one’s sex is a common surgical procedure. Science may be the only element proud of the breakthrough and the fact that people now are freer to choose their appearances and identities.

4. Breast implants. The introduction of silicones initially shocked and awed the world. There were a lot of willing participants in the procedure, which promises voluptuous figures and increased sex appeal. However, there were also several claims that the results of breasts implants later on were conducive to breast infection, cancer, and the like, eventually spurring government bodies to ban or limit the use of the material. Religion sees the act as denying one’s self and carnally sinful.

5. Botox treatment. The rise of the Botox generation in the recent years has been both amazing and alarming. Although the injections had a lot of satisfied customers with wrinkle-free foreheads and nearly zero manifestations of facial “sagginess,” there are also speculations regarding the product’s long term effects. Since Botox has not been in circulation for more than a decade, some experts argue that it should not be fully released unless its chronic effects have been observed and tested.
