Do-it-yourself Botox?
Well, there’s really only one story in the cosmetic surgery world today and that is buy-from-a-catalogue Botox.
No joke. Manchester, England-based Transfrom is now advertising Botox kits via catalogue. Practically sings the catalogue advert: “Look and feel younger without setting foot in the surgery.” Heck, that’s a pitch about one of the many reporting on the phenomenon said, “The idea is compelling.”
Naturally, this idea has got to be as bad as it sounds, and folks like the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons have lined up to warn against such frivolousness. Member of BAAPS, a not-for-profit organisation with a mission statement supporting “the advancement of education and practice of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for public benefit,” couldn’t wait to take shots.
A quick run of quotes, then. (Imagine them with British accents; much more pointed that way.)
Consulting plastic surgeon and BAAPS president Douglas McGeorge said, “I’m surprised that any cosmetic surgery company claiming to provide quality of care would choose to market through a clothing catalogue…”
Nigel Mercer, consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS president-elect, says, “By its own nature, the choice of a catalogue defines these treatments as easy to purchase, even frivolous, undermining the seriousness of what is still a medical procedure, even if it’s non-surgical.”
A third from Adam Searle, consultant plastic surgeon and former BAAPS prez kicked in that “Aesthetic procedures seem to have been reduced to the status of socks and pants selection.”
Despite the ease in ordering, the Botox must still be administered in a clinic with – guess what – Transform product. Transform operations director Pat Dunion issued a statement saying that there was “absolutely no danger in using the procedures earmarked by them.”
According to Dunion, “Transform is regulated by the Healthcare Commission and all our practitioners across our 22 clinics are either a qualified doctor, surgeon or a registered general nurse.”
“The partnership with [catalogue company] Grattan is an effective means of widening the non-surgical market. The clinical decision process for Grattan customers is the same as for all our non-surgical patients.”
